University of Maryland Zionist Organization of America
The Zionist Organization of America is the oldest pro-Israel organization in the United States. We
aim to foster and promote US-Israel relations and work on campuses throughout the country to educate and inform students about
Israel. Through a diverse array of speakers, programs, campaigns, trips, etc. we aim to spread accurate information about the
history and current situation in the Middle East.
The ZOA Chapter at University of Maryland is committed to bringing a strong pro-Israel message
to campus. We seek to inform the general student body about Israel and political and social issues that it currently
faces by providing speakers from diverse backgrounds and expertise. We advocate for Israel both on campus and on Capitol Hill, and
train students how to best support the Jewish state. We raise money for charities and celebrate Israel’s independence, achievements,
people, and culture.
Past Events
In the Spring, 2007 semester, we had the following programs and events:
- We hosted Mazi Melesa, an Ethiopian oleh, to talk about her experience and raise awareness for the situation of Ethiopian
Jewery
- We brought Moshe Katz, an elite instructor in the Israeli martial art of Krav Maga, to give a self-defense workshop
- We brought Nonie Darwish, an Egyptian-born Arab, to speak about her transition from her radical, Jihadist upbringing to
becoming a vocal supporter of Israel and the US War on Terror
- We sold over seventy “I ♥ Israel” t-shirts on campus, raising more than $250 for the Koby Mandell Foundation to support
victims of terror.
- We participated in the Hillel Purim Carnival and the Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut programs.
Leadership
The current presidents of the ZOA-UMD are Aaron Salter (asalter@umd.edu), a junior from
Newton, MA, and Dov Lerner (dsl87@umd.edu), a sophomore from Sharon, MA. Both Aaron and Dov have
participated in The David Project’s Israel advocacy seminars and began their involvement with the club in the Spring, 07
semester.
Get involved!
We are always looking for students to get involved. Whether you want to simply join our email list, attend our events, or assist
the planning and preparation for our programs, do not hesitate to ask us.
