Opportunities: Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington (JCRC)

Mission

The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington (JCRC) is the government and community relations arm for our local Jewish population, representing over 210 constituent agencies, organizations and synagogues in Northern Virginia, the District of Columbia and suburban Maryland.

The JCRC endeavors to foster a society based on freedom, justice and democratic pluralism; for it is such a society which affords Jews, and all people, the conditions most conducive to individual security, equal opportunity and creative group survival.

The JCRC is charged with achieving consensus on the broad range of public policy issues central to Jewish conscience and concern. Those views are then promulgated to Washington area legislators, as well as civic, public opinion, media and interfaith leaders. The JCRC also coordinates within the Jewish community programs of information and advocacy on priority domestic and international issues.

Intern Responsibilities

Successful candidates for JCRC internships must demonstrate superb written and oral communications skills, a dedication to Jewish values, and strong computer capabilities. JCRC interns are involved in all aspects of our programs, especially our events planning and publicity, but also our policy development and information management. At least 3-5 events are scheduled monthly for community education or advocacy by our hyper-energetic staff – to support these efforts a successful intern needs to be a self-motivator, able to prioritize, with robust organizational skills, attention to detail, and administrative experience. Compensation and transportation subsidies may be available for the right candidate.

20 hours a week is required at $12 an hour.

Those interested should send a cover letter and brief resume to rhalber@jcouncil.org.

During the upcoming year interns are likely to assist:

  • Our Israel Advocacy program: planning our Middle East forums, “Days Off the Hill” series with Congressional leaders, upcoming Israel mission for elected officials and other Israel advocacy event;
  • Our Holocaust program: developing our 2007 Holocaust commemoration event;
  • Our State & Local advocacy: planning and publicity for our state and county level advocacy days, legislator receptions, candidates’ forums for DC mayoral and council chair contenders; and legislative review series;
  • Our Social Justice work: including policy research for our issue briefings and political agenda development and support for our literacy programming and book drives.
  • Our Data Maintenance of legislative voting records and JCRC membership information.
