Dear Campus Leaders:
The Washington office of CAMERA - the Boston-based Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America - looks forward to working with you in meeting your needs for current events and news media-related programming dealing with Israel, Arab-Israeli issues, and U.S.-Israel relations for the 2008 - 2009 school year.
This is CAMERA's 26th year, and in that time we have grown from a handful of pro-Israel activists to an organization with 55,000 supporters in the United States, Israeland 11 other countries. Our campus-related activities include publication three times a year of CAMERA on Campus magazine, with case studies and examples of successful news media monitoring and pro-Israel activism; the CAMERA Fellows program, now at more than 20 universities; and our speakers bureau. And, of course, our Web site - www.camera.org - is an invaluable factual resource. (CAMERA on Campus is distributed at more than 400 North American universities and colleges, often through Hillel. If you have not been receiving CAMERA on Campus, please let me know.)
One of CAMERA's founders was the late Prof. William Perl. A psychology and law graduate in pre-war Vienna, Perl was active in the "illegal immigration" that helped save tens of thousands of Jews from the Holocaust. A special assistant to the prosecution at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, he eventually taught at George Washington and American universities. He told CAMERA's co-founders that what antisemitism was in his youth, anti-Zionism would be in the 1980s and beyond, and that communications media would be key battlefields.
Prof. Perl's insight endures. It continues to inform CAMERA's effort to hold news media to their own professed standards of accuracy, objectivity, balance, context and comprehensiveness. As you plan programs for this academic year, I would like to request that you consider CAMERA.
